Every Files.com site receives a unique custom subdomain that looks like <your-subdomain>.files.com. Your custom branding (including logo and colors) is visible throughout the entire Files.com experience, including logging in and accessing public pages like inboxes and share links.

You can take your site customization a step further by setting up a Primary Custom Domain such as files.your-company.com, so users connect through an address on a domain you control.

Even when you add a custom domain for your site, your custom subdomain still works to access your site.

Beyond this single Primary Custom Domain, you can define additional custom domains, each scoped to a specific purpose such as branding a Public Hosting folder.

Adding a custom domain can affect the transmission speed of international file transfers when using our Regional Storage or our Regional Data Routing features.

Benefits of a Custom Domain

A custom domain gives users a consistent address on your organization's domain in their browsers, emails, and marketing materials.

Our flexible SSL/TLS management options for your custom domain let you choose how to manage your certificates. You can continue to delegate certificate management to our built-in automated processes, or retain management of your own certificates.

Your Primary Custom Domain also provides dedicated IP addresses for your site. Additional Custom Domains can receive their own dedicated addresses through a separate allocation. Dedicated addresses help with firewall allowlists and let individual domains present their own SFTP host keys.

Connection and Migration Choices

If a counterparty permits connections only to approved hostnames or IP addresses, give its network administrator your configured domain and the relevant dedicated addresses. A custom hostname does not guarantee acceptance by a network filter; the counterparty's policy still controls the connection.

When replacing an existing SFTP service, custom host keys can preserve the server identity established clients trust. This requires dedicated IP addresses. Additional domains with their own addresses and host keys let several established services retain distinct connection identities on one Files.com site, while users and permissions remain shared.

A Custom Domain also enables a site-scoped username namespace. In that arrangement, users must connect through the site's dedicated endpoint so Files.com can identify the site before looking up the username.

For a hostname change, multiple domains allow old and new addresses to coexist while clients transition. Choose independently managed certificates, or a shared SAN certificate when FTPS names must share the Primary Custom Domain's addresses. Review certificate, DNS, and client configuration together before retiring the old address.

Domains for Different Audiences

An additional Public Hosting domain can serve a brand's public assets, optionally limited to one hosted folder. A Site Alias instead provides another entry point to the same site. Share Links, Inboxes, and emailed links continue to use the Primary Custom Domain. Use Child Sites when brands need independent authentication, branding, or other site-wide settings rather than another hostname for shared resources.
