WebDAV

WebDAV is a standard protocol for accessing the Cloud from your desktop or another computer.

Files.com supports WebDAV. If your goal is access to Files.com from your desktop, use the Files.com Desktop App instead. The Desktop App supports Windows and Mac and is faster, easier to use, and more secure than WebDAV.

Some customers need to use WebDAV for specific reasons. If those reasons apply to you, follow the articles in this section to connect to Files.com via WebDAV.

Limitations

A single upload or download over WebDAV performs well, but WebDAV is a chatty protocol. Each file action takes several round trips between the client and the server. Performance drops as soon as multiple files are used, whether from concurrent transfers or from editing a file in place on the remote.

Native operating-system WebDAV clients also impose their own limits. Windows, for example, caps WebDAV downloads at 50 MB by default and fails uploads that run longer than 30 minutes. Some clients re-prompt for credentials or leave files incomplete when a long transfer is interrupted.

Connection Information

The WebDAV URL for your site is the https:// URL to your Files.com subdomain. Enter https://SUBDOMAIN.files.com/ (where SUBDOMAIN is your Files.com subdomain) anywhere you are asked for a URL, or use the custom domain for your site if one is configured. Connecting by IP address sometimes works, but it is not officially supported.

WebDAV is only offered over https://. An insecure (unencrypted) version is not offered. Enable encryption in your client when it offers the choice. Some clients present this as a protocol choice, offering WebDAVS or WebDAV(HTTPS). A WebDAV client that cannot use TLS/SSL encryption cannot connect to Files.com.

The WebDAVS port 443 is rarely blocked by corporate firewalls because it is shared with HTTPS. Many regulated corporations inspect traffic on port 443 and explicitly block WebDAV. Verify with your network IT team that WebDAV connectivity to Files.com is allowed.
