July 2026

In July, we created AI tasks, allowing you to automate any action the AI assistant can take, the AI Assistant gained a full chat history with transcript viewing and session resume, persistent memory across sessions, and configurable personalities. Alongside that, API keys can now be scoped to files-only access, a new Secret Store centralizes credential management, and several Remote Server integrations gained new or faster authentication and upload paths.

Scheduled and Action-Triggered AI Tasks

Site Administrators and Workspace Administrators can create AI Tasks that store a prompt for the Files.com AI Assistant. The task runs its prompt either manually, on a recurring interval, on a custom schedule, or when matching file activity occurs. This extends the AI Assistant beyond one-off chat sessions into recurring or event-driven automation.

Updates to the AI Assistant

The AI Assistant provides intelligent access to your site through a chat interface. Use the AI Assistant to research errors, ask about features, and allow the assistant to make configuration changes for you.

AI Assistant Personalities

Site Administrators and Workspace Administrators can define personalities for the AI Assistant. Personalities set the Assistant's tone, voice, and persona so it can reflect your own brand and processes. Personalities change how the Assistant talks, not what it's allowed to do.

AI Chat Memory Across Sessions

The AI Assistant now remembers information for a user across chat sessions. After you complete a chat, the Assistant creates memories for durable preferences, recurring workflows, naming conventions, and ongoing projects. Users can view or delete their individual memories, or turn memory off entirely.

AI Assistant Chat History Features

The AI Assistant keeps a history of your prior chat sessions, with an auto-generated title so you can find your previous conversations. View a read-only transcript, or resume one that's still active instead of starting a new chat from scratch.

Updated Desktop App Finder Access and Offline Sync for macOS

On macOS, the way the Desktop App mounts your Files.com site in FinderExternal LinkThis link leads to an external website and will open in a new tab has been improved. Your site still appears in Finder and works the same way day to day, but files are now kept locally for offline accessExternal LinkThis link leads to an external website and will open in a new tab, letting you open and edit files without a network connection. Your changes sync back to Files.com when you reconnect. Each profile appears as its own top-level folder in Finder, with a per-profile toggle to show or hide it. This is available starting in version 6.0.2741.

Group Admins Can Manage Membership of Their Groups

The Add or remove existing users in their groups setting lets Group Admins change group memberships for user accounts that already exist on the site. The new setting is disabled by default because it allows Group Admins to list users in your site, so a Site Administrator must turn the setting on to allow these changes.

Other Minor Updates

OAuth Authentication for GCS Remote Servers

Google Cloud Storage Remote Servers now offer OAuth authentication. Provide the bucket name and choose whether the connection gets Read Only or Read/Write access. An administrator completes Google's consent flow and Files.com stores the resulting token. There's no key file to download, rotate, or secure.

SharePoint App-Only Authentication via Entra ID

SharePoint Remote Servers can now authenticate using a Microsoft Entra ID app registration instead of an interactive Microsoft login. The Remote Server connection runs as the app itself, with no periodic re-authentication required.

Direct-to-Storage Upload for S3-Compatible Providers

Uploads and Downloads using the CLI, Desktop App or SDKs to several S3-Compatible Remote Servers interact directly with the storage backend. Direct Routing, which already applied to Amazon S3 and some Google Cloud Storage connections, now affects transfers to S3 Compatible, CloudflareExternal LinkThis link leads to an external website and will open in a new tab, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, Akamai Linode, and Filebase Remote Servers. This change does not apply to uploads through the web interface.

Restrict API Keys to File Operations Only

API keys can restricted to Files Only access rather than Full Access, so that specific keys associated with a priveleged administrator are blocked from making configuration changes. This is designed for AI agents and other automated integrations that only need file access.

Managing Permissions in the Web Interface

Folder Permission management has a new look across the web interface. Create multiple permissions for a folder in one step, and see at a glance where permissions originate. A new Check Access view lets you look up what access a specific user, group, or partner effectively has.
