Salem Radio Network Keeps Yesterday's News Off the Air With Files.com Automations

Salem Media Group is the largest commercial U.S. radio broadcaster of Christian and conservative programming. It owns 99 radio stations, and its syndication arm, Salem Radio Network, distributes programming to more than 2,500 affiliate stations from its network center in Dallas, including newscasts at the top and bottom of every hour.
Almost none of that audio is carried to air by a person. Programs, newscasts, weather and traffic land as MP3 files in folders, and broadcast automation pulls them out on a fixed schedule for playback. That is what lets the operation run at this scale, and it carries one quiet consequence: a file sitting in a folder is a broadcast decision. Whatever the automation finds is what the audience hears.
The Playout Crawler Airs Whatever File It Finds
The freshness workflow at issue runs in Salem's Chicago and Detroit markets, both managed by Eric Thomas, Director of Operations and Programming. The last hop to air goes through Radio Spider, a crawler that pulls audio out of the folders where Salem's content lands, over SFTP, and hands it to WideOrbit, the broadcast automation system that plays it. Radio Spider does work nothing else in the chain does: audio compression, metadata checks, and the technical standards a file has to meet for on-air playback.
It also has a blind spot.
“It just checked if it was there. It didn't do a date check to see if it was 24 hours old.”
On a news/talk station, that behavior has one failure mode, and it is audience-facing: if yesterday's newscast or traffic report is still sitting in the folder, it goes to air. The only thing standing between a stale file and the transmitter was housekeeping. Someone had to remember to clear each folder when its broadcast day ended, every day, across every time-sensitive folder in those markets. That kind of vigilance is exactly what radio no longer has to spare. Salem runs these markets with smaller station staffs than the industry once carried, and a control that lives in a person's memory fails on the day that person is busy, off shift, or gone.
Radio Spider Could Not Change, So the Folders Had To
Replacing or modifying the crawler was not an option. Eric Thomas describes Radio Spider as essential: it handles the audio-specific compression, metadata checks, and technical standards required for on-air playback, and Salem's downstream affiliates use the same tool to pull shows into their own automation. Whatever fixed freshness had to leave Radio Spider and WideOrbit exactly as they were.
That put the fix upstream, at the file layer. It had to empty each time-sensitive folder at the moment its content expired, on that content's own clock, because different folder sets expire at different hours. It had to run every day with no person involved. And it had to keep working as more folder sets were added.
Salem enforced it with Files.com, where the audio already lands on its way to Radio Spider. Scheduled-deletion Automations empty each folder set on its own broadcast-day schedule, so the folder itself guarantees what the crawler can find.

A Files.com Automation empties both folders at 8 p.m. Central, the moment the broadcast day's use of them ends. When the Dallas reporter uploads before dawn, the folders are guaranteed clean, and when Radio Spider comes looking, the only file it can find is the one recorded that morning.
The same pattern now runs across the Chicago and Detroit operation: 22 scheduled delete processes, each pointed at its own folder set and matched to that content's broadcast window. Every run happens whether or not anyone is thinking about it.
Only the Current Day's File Can Reach Air
With the deletion schedules in production, Salem replaced a freshness control that lived in people's memory with one that runs on the broadcast clock.
- A stale newscast can no longer reach air. Radio Spider still checks only whether a file exists, and that is now enough, because the only file that ever exists is the current one.
- On-air accuracy and accountability improved, a change Eric Thomas ties directly to running with smaller station staffs. Every run is logged, leaving a record of exactly when each folder was cleared. The platform supplies the daily vigilance a leaner team cannot.
- Nobody clears folders by hand. Emptying happens at the hour the content expires, every day, including the days when everyone is busy with something else.

Freshness Is Now the Platform's Job, Not a Person's
Today, in Salem's Chicago and Detroit markets, whether the right audio reaches the transmitter no longer depends on anyone remembering to empty a folder at 8 p.m. Files.com enforces the broadcast day at the file layer. Radio Spider, unchanged and still essential, can only ever hand playout the file that is supposed to air.
The lesson travels well beyond radio. When downstream automation will take whatever file it finds, the fix is not a smarter crawler or a more careful staff. It is making sure the only file it can find is the right one.
