Protocols enabledAWS Transfer Family
$20,235/yr- Turning on the protocols (2)$5,184
AWS charges $0.30 an hour for each protocol you turn on, all year — even when no files move. 2 × $0.30/hr × 8,640 hrs.
Transfer Family pricing — protocol-enabled endpoints - A web app for your people$4,320
Anyone who isn't a script needs a browser to use. AWS bills the Web App at $0.50 an hour, all year, and it's a separate login from your SFTP users. $0.50/hr × 8,640 hrs.
Transfer Family pricing — Web Apps - Moving the files$983
AWS charges $0.04 for every GB that moves, in or out. 24,576 GB this year.
Transfer Family pricing — data uploaded/downloaded - Pulling files from partner SFTP$5,530
12,288 GB/yr × $0.40/GB + per-call charges.
Transfer Family pricing — SFTP Connectors - Decrypting PGP files$1,229
12,288 GB/yr inbound × $0.10/GB. Transfer Family can only decrypt files coming in — to encrypt files going out, you write the code yourself.
Transfer Family pricing — PGP decryption - Sending files out to the internet$1,106
12,288 GB/yr outbound × $0.090/GB in US East (N. Virginia).
Amazon S3 / EC2 pricing — data transfer out - A fixed IP address (VPC / NAT)$1,884
2 NAT gateways × $0.045/hr + $0.045/GB. Needed to give partners a fixed IP address they can allow through their firewall, across two availability zones for high availability.
Amazon VPC pricing — NAT Gateway
Files.com Power
$6,469/yr- Power plan$5,269
The plan you need once you use AS2 or GPG. Includes single sign-on, the on-prem Agent, and a custom domain, plus everything in Starter.
- Extra storage and transfer$1,200
1 TB beyond the 2 TB the plan includes, at $100 per TB per month.
Estimated annual savings with Files.com
$13,766
At this workload Files.com costs about 68% less than AWS Transfer Family — $6,469 a year versus $20,235. And you don’t have to build anything. Setting up partners, converting files, the audit trail, the web app your people use, share links, PGP — it’s all already in the box. On AWS you build and run every piece of that yourself.
AWS rates are list pricing as of May 2026 from the AWS pricing pages linked on each line. Files.com figures use published Starter and Power annual list pricing and overage rates. S3 storage is excluded on both sides — Files.com mounts your existing bucket, so you pay the same S3 bill either way. The Lambda / Step Functions orchestration layer AWS has you wire up isn’t priced here; its runtime cost is small and the real cost is the engineering to build it. How This Calculator Works
The AWS side uses list pricing from the AWS Transfer Family pricing page and the surrounding service pages (S3, VPC, Secrets Manager, Lambda) as of May 2026. Every line item in the result shows the math and links to the page you can verify it against. Transfer Family endpoints are billed per protocol, per hour — the meter runs around the clock whether or not a file moves.
The line items are only the AWS bill. Transfer Family moves files in and out of S3; the partner workflow, the file conversion, the audit log, and the screens your users see are yours to build in AWS Lambda code. AWS’s own published FICO build ran 145+ Terraform-managed resources with a custom dual-Lambda integration bridge and a custom Splunk audit pipeline — none of which shows up in the calculator, and all of which Files.com ships built in.
The Files.com side uses published Starter and Power annual pricing and the published overage rates. Every part you’d build on AWS — partner channels, transformation, scanning, the audit log, the UI, share links, PGP — ships inside that price. Want the full argument, not just the numbers?
