Foreign Language Support

Web Interface

The Files.com web interface supports multiple languages. These can be configured site-wide, and can be set in the settings for an individual user. Currently, Files.com supports 6 languages:

  • English
  • Deutsch (German)
  • Español (Spanish)
  • Français (French)
  • 日本語 (Japanese)
  • Português (Portuguese)

Changing these language settings will only impact the web interface.

Setting the Default Web UI Language for Your Site

Site admins can set the language used by default by all users. This can be overridden by individual users' own settings for language. Changing the site language will not impact other interfaces, such as FTP, which are only available in English. The desktop application has its own language setting, which is not affected by the site language setting

Web UI

To update the language for your site, navigate to Settings > Site Identity and look for the Language setting.

API

The Site API contains the methods for viewing or changing the language setting. Supported options are "en", "de", "es", "fr", "ja", or "pt".

CLI

The FIles.com CLI application allows you to view the default language for your site with this command:

files-cli sites get --fields language

Use this command to set the default language using the CLI application (replace <NEW LANGUAGE> with en, de, es, fr, ja, or pt):

files-cli sites update --language="<NEW LANGUAGE>"

Setting A User's Preferred Web UI Language

Administrators can update a user's preferred language setting to override the site-wide default language for the web interface. Changing the user's preferred language will not impact other interfaces, such as FTP, which are only available in English. The desktop application has its own language setting, which is not affected by the user's preferred language setting

Web UI

To update a user's language, navigate to Settings > Users then click on the username of the desired user and locate the Language setting. Click the Edit button to select a different language.

API

The Users API contains methods for viewing or updating a user's language setting. Supported options are "en", "de", "es", "fr", "ja", or "pt".

CLI

A site admin can use the Files.com CLI App to view a user's preferred language by using the following command (replace <ID NUMBER> with the internal numeric ID assigned to the user)

files-cli users find --id=<ID NUMBER> --fields language

Use this command to update a user's preferred language (replace <ID NUMBER> with the internal numeric ID assigned to the user and replace <NEW LANGUAGE> with en, de, es, fr, ja, or pt):

files-cli users update --id=<ID NUMBER> --language="<NEW LANGUAGE>"

Updating Your Preferred Language Setting

Users who can log into the web interface can change their own interface language setting without requiring an administrator's intervention. Changing the user's preferred language will not impact other interfaces, such as FTP, which are only available in English. The desktop application has its own language setting, which is not affected by your preferred language setting

Web UI

  1. Log into the web interface.
  2. Click on your username in the upper-right corner of the page.
  3. Select the first clickable option in the dropdown menu.
  4. Locate the setting that has the name of a language. It will appear below the setting for time zone.
  5. Click the button to the right of the option and choose the new language from the list.
  6. Click the first button below the dropdown to save your change.

The change should take effect immediately.

Desktop Application

The Files.com desktop application also supports languages other than English.

By default, the desktop application will use the computer system's language preference. To change the language that's used by the desktop app interface, locate the Language tab in the Preferences, and choose the desired language from the dropdown.

Changing the Language setting in the desktop app will not change the Web UI settings, and it will not impact other interfaces like FTP that are only available in English.

Customer Support

At this time, Files.com can only provide customer support in English.
