Access Control by Country
Site administrators can allow access from specified countries by going to Settings > Users > User Settings and scroll to Allowed Countries. Click the Add country button, selected the country to allow, and save.
Site administrators can restrict access from specified countries by going to Settings > Users > User Settings and scroll to Disallowed Countries. Click the Add country button, selected the country to disallow, and save.
Disallowed countries take precedence over allowed countries.
The country location of the IP address is determined automatically by the information provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). For example, you can look up the geographic information associated with an IP address by using sites such as What Is My IP and ipinfo.io.
The IP address, and its associated location information, is determined by the network that is currently connected to. Your IP address, and its associated location information, will change as you connect to different networks, such as VPNs, WiFi hotspots, home networks, cellular networks, corporate networks, and so on. The location information is determined by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) of the network you are connected to rather than your physical location. For example, if you are physically in San Francisco, California, but your network connection is through a VPN connection to your corporate office in Toronto, Canada, then your IP location will show as Canada instead of United States.
If in doubt, check your IP address information, using sites such as What Is My IP and ipinfo.io, from all of the network connections that you use.
The IP Whitelist setting does not override any Access Control by Country restrictions you set up.
For example, IP addresses that are associated with countries in your list of Disallowed countries will not be allowed to connect, even if they are in IP whitelists.
This is because disallowing sanctioned, or dangerous countries is typically a company-wide policy which should not be overridden or circumvented.
Allowed countries and Disallowed countries apply only to authenticated connections from users.
Features that do not require a user account are not impacted by country restriction, including:
In general, Files.com platform logs all logins attempted by any users or systems. If there are any attempts to login from a country or IP address which is not allowed by the Administrator, Files.com platform rejects the authentication and corresponding login attempt will be logged under Users > [username] > History.
Access control by country will work if the network information of the IP address matches the countries you specify in the configuration. Use sites such as What Is My IP and ipinfo.io to confirm that the country associated with the IP address is what you expect it to be.
-
The country specified in the network information for the IP address does not match the country you specified in the configuration.
- Use sites such as What Is My IP and ipinfo.io to confirm that the country associated with the IP address is what you expect it to be.
-
The country you specified is also being used in the Disallowed Countries configuration.
- Disallowed countries take precedence over allowed countries.
-
The user may be using a VPN connection to a different country.
- Check which VPN networks are being used, and their associated IP addresses, and either include all those countries in the configuration or inform the user about which network connection they should avoid using.
