September 2025

September brings updates to the Files.com Desktop App, Sync, transfers to Amazon S3 and S3-compatible Remote Servers, and the Files.com On-Premise Agent.

Desktop v6 App Replaces Desktop v4 App

Files.com Desktop v6 App now supports Mounted Drive Mode for both Windows and macOS, allowing you to browse, open, edit, and save files directly in Explorer or Finder.

Desktop v6 App offers two modes of access. Stand Alone Mode handles high-speed uploads and downloads for large-scale data transfers and bulk workflows. Mounted Drive Mode integrates Files.com directly into your operating system through Explorer and Finder for everyday use. A single client installs both modes together.

Files.com is also sunsetting the legacy Desktop v4 App. Desktop v4 will no longer receive updates or new features. Upgrade all users to the Desktop v6 App. There is no direct upgrade path from v4 to v6, so you must uninstall v4 before installing v6.

New Sync Capabilities

The new Sync feature replaces the legacy Remote Server Sync feature.

Rather than just synchronizing a local folder with a remote server, Sync can connect local folders and remote servers in any combination. You can now sync between two remote servers directly without creating a mount.

Each Sync now includes its own dedicated log file, making it simpler to audit Sync activity and troubleshoot issues.

Syncs now always transfer files from a source to a destination, unlike remote server syncs, which could "push" or "pull". Standardizing this format reduces the planning required to manage large numbers of Syncs.

All existing Remote Server Syncs automatically upgrade to the new Sync, so no action is required to convert existing flows.

The updated Sync APIs are supported by all of our SDKs. If you currently rely on the Files.com SDKs or Terraform to configure your remote server syncs, update your tools to use the new Sync APIs.

Faster Uploads for S3-Compatible Remote Servers

Uploads to Amazon S3 and other S3-compatible servers are now faster, improving Remote Server Mount transfers regardless of how you connect to your site. This also speeds up Syncs that upload to Amazon S3 or S3-compatible Remote Servers.

No action is required to take advantage of the improved performance for your Remote Server connections.

On-Premise Agent Upgrades

Transfers with the Files.com On-Premise Agent are now faster, and the Agent no longer requires manual installation of future updates.

File Transfer Speed Improvements

Uploads to an Agent through our SDKs, the Web UI, CLI, or Desktop App are now faster, especially for large file transfers. Starting with v2.0.6065, files are split into multiple parts that transfer in parallel and are reassembled by the Agent.

Transfers from Files.com storage or from Remote Servers using an S3 interface to the Files.com Agent are also parallelized, with transfers up to 6x faster. Individual part failures can now be retried without restarting the entire file transfer, making large migrations and syncs more resilient.

Automatic Updates

The Files.com On-Premise Agent now supports automatic updates. You can choose the update behavior for each Agent: all automatic updates, only critical fixes, or no automatic updates.

Automatic updates keep your system secure even when you do not have ongoing access to the host server. Updates are cryptographically verified to confirm they have not been tampered with. If an update causes the Agent to fail to start, it automatically rolls back to the previously installed version.

Minor Updates

New features for troubleshooting and preventing accidental data loss.

Site Alerts for Read-only Administrators

Site Administrators can configure any Read-only administrator to receive site alert emails, such as alerts about LDAP, single sign-on integration failures, and users locked out after too many failures. This gives Read-only Administrators more tools to provide self-service troubleshooting for end-users.

Automatically Archive Files

The new Archive Removed Files feature protects against accidental data loss by preserving every item that is deleted or overwritten in a folder. Removed items are moved into a designated archive path rather than deleted, so a record of past versions remains available for recovery, compliance, or audits.
