Where WinSCP Fits, And Where It Stops

WinSCP is free, open source, and one of the best-liked tools in its category. It speaks SFTP, FTPS, FTP, SCP, and WebDAV, it will open an S3 bucket, and it has a scripting interface and a .NET assembly. Files.com is not trying to take it off anybody: it is a standards-compliant endpoint, so a partner who wants to connect with WinSCP connects with WinSCP.

The limit is what it is: a Windows client. There is no server side, no scheduler, and nothing that acts on a file rather than carrying it. So the moment a transfer has to happen unattended, the real system is a script plus Windows Task Scheduler plus a machine plus whoever wrote it — and that system grows one script per destination until somebody inherits all of them.

What replaces a WinSCP run is not a better client. It is the transfer happening with nobody there and nothing to maintain. WinSCP runs on Windows, on a box somebody owns. When it is the bridge between your partners and your file shares, that box is the bridge — and so is the person who knows how it was set up. WinSCP will open an S3 bucket, which is how it becomes the tool for a job it was never built for. At Bates White a data engineer opened WinSCP, browsed the bucket, and pulled files down to a network share one at a time — and it could not carry the files the work actually produces.
